Transport in Australia is a highly significant part of the infrastructure of the economy, with large distances between populated areas and a very low population density. Both the road and rail networks are extensive. Australia has one of the lowest populations of the countries in the Transport Statistics Programme at 20 million, second smallest only to the Czech Republic. It has the highest percentage of its population resident in the urban areas

At nearly 13,000 kilometres, the distance travelled per person per year by car or similar motor vehicle is amongst the highest of all the countries included in the database, surpassed only by the USA and Canada.
