Transport in Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is one of the most prosperous of the post-Communist states, and has been recovering from recession since the late 1990s. Socio-economic changes in the 1980s and 1990s brought about significant changes in transport, traffic behavior and road safety with the increase in motorisation and passenger car transport accompanied by unusually high growth of the road accident rate. The Czech Republic has the lowest population of all the countries included in the Transport Statistics database at just over 10 million, and falling. Seventy-five per cent live in urban areas. Despite having one of the highest road densities, the length of the motorway network remains low at 550km.

Although road accident deaths are falling, the fatality rate per population is moderately high, similar to that in the USA.
