Germany has the largest population in Europe and is expected to peak between 2005 and 2010. With an area of 357,000 square kilometres, population density is similar to that in Britain. Eighty-nine per cent live in urban areas. Despite an extensive railway network, including the high-speed intercity rail system, between 80 and 85 per cent of distance travelled is by car.
