Transport in Spain

Spain has a population of 44 million, which will probably begin declining in a decade. Seventy-seven per cent live in urban areas. With an area of over 500,000 square kilometres, it has a population density that is lower than that of France. Despite expansion of the road network between 1990 and the end of the decade, alongside rising car ownership, only about 69% of the passenger kilometres travelled are by car.

Spain is an interesting example of a country where rising car ownership led to a large increase in road accident fatalities. Following the introduction of an exemplary package of policies, including the construction of modern high quality roads, changes to traffic laws with strong legislation, enforcement and education of road-users, the accident trend was stemmed, and then reversed, despite continuing growth in traffic
